Getting started
A data SIM is configured like a standard SIM, with one difference: the access point (APN) must be entered correctly, otherwise the device attaches to the network without ever accessing the Internet.
Steps
- Insert the SIM with the device switched off.
- Power on and let the device search for the network (up to two minutes on first power-up).
- Enter the APN provided with your order, in the mobile network settings.
- Restart, then check Internet access from the device.
Points to watch
- SIM format: check before ordering whether your hardware takes a standard, micro or nano SIM — or a soldered eSIM.
- Frequency bands: an older router may not support the bands used locally. The device then connects in 3G, or not at all.
- PIN code: disable it on devices without a screen, otherwise the SIM will stay locked after every power outage.
- Antenna: on a poorly covered site, an external antenna makes more of a difference than any software setting.
The device does not connect
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| No network detected | SIM not inserted properly, PIN active, or incompatible bands |
| Network attached but no Internet | APN missing or entered incorrectly |
| Connection drops regularly | Weak signal — consider an external antenna |
| Very slow speed | Data allowance used up |
Note the serial number (ICCID) of each SIM next to the device where it is installed. On a fleet of several dozen devices, this is what lets you identify within seconds the one that is using data abnormally.
